Huge game by Cavan boosts Gillette over Bozeman, 9-2

Tyler Cavan had two goals and three assists to lead the Gillette Wild to a 9-2 victory over the Bozeman Icedogs.

Cavan's tallies came short handed at 13:27 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Gillette and 1:14 into the second to make the score 4-1 Gillette.

Bozeman's power play was ineffective against Gillette's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

The Wild racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and two majors for 46 minutes in penalty time. Gillette had been averaging 25.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Icedogs were unable to stop the Wild from sending pucks towards the net, and Gillette eventually piled up 45 shots on goal. The Wild found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, Gillette averages 4.2 goals per contest.

Gillette also got points from Ronnie Wilshusen, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, Taylor Motsinger, who also had three goals and two assists, and Tyler Johnson, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Gillette also got a goal from Trent Dillinger as well. Other players who recorded assists for Gillette were Matt Rose, who had three, Steve Patafio, Boris Knyazev, and Bobby Solari, who contributed one a piece, and Alex King and Darren Banks, who each chipped in two.

The Bozeman penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled eight minors and two majors for 46 minutes in penalty time. The Icedogs surpassed its season average of 14.0 penalty minutes per game. Bozeman made Wild's goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, totaling 42 shots and forcing 40 saves. Sean Kelley made 29 stops and Nick Vittori made 11.

The Icedogs were helped by Matt Calcasi, who had one goal. Calcasi scored 6:12 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Bozeman. Ben Henry assisted on the tally. Bozeman additionally got points from Henry, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. In addition, Bozeman received assists from Trent Carter and Michael Kurfess, who contributed one a piece.

The Wild registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. Gillette ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Connor Hicks was ejected from the game. Bozeman's John Shavic stopped 36 shots out of the 45 that he faced. For the Icedogs, Jonathon Benavides and Tre Dolezel were ejected from the contest.
