GAME RECAP

Brown lifts Napanee over Port Hope, 5-4

Jack Burger Sports Complex    Fri, Dec 21, 2012

Behind a great game by Evan Brown, who had four goals, the Napanee Raiders defeated the Port Hope Panthers, 5-4.

Brown's first goal came 7:17 into the first period. He then added goals at 7:18 into the second, at 10:22 into the second, and at 9:43 into the third.

Port Hope's power play was ineffective against Napanee's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The Raiders made the Panthers' goaltenders to work without much rest, getting 41 shots and forcing 36 saves. Wayne Fryer made 15 stops and Colin Goody made 21. Napanee stifled Port Hope's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Raiders could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 22 minutes in penalties during the game.

Napanee also got a goal from Matt Horton as well. In addition, Napanee received assists from Zach Knapp-Hermer, who had two and Andre Frappier, Blade Grigg, Bud Norris, and Ryan Thistlethwaite, who contributed one a piece.

The Panthers put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Napanee to score on any of its 10 power plays. Port Hope kept the Raiders' goalie busy throughout the game, and Kyle Copeland made 36 saves on 40 shots. The Panthers could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 28 minutes in penalties during the game.

Port Hope was led by Shawn Mackie, who registered two goals and one assist. Mackie scored the first of his two goals at 16:22 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Napanee. Chris Jones assisted on the tally. Mackie's next tally made the score 3-3 with 19:32 left in the third period. Josh Fagan provided the assist. Port Hope also got points from Jones, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Ryan Hickey also scored for Port Hope. Other players who recorded assists for Port Hope were Ryan DeGuerre and Austin Veleke APM, who each chipped in one.

Napanee ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Thistlethwaite was ejected from the game.
