Amherstview uses early goal to top Deseronto, 5-3Deseronto & District CC Fri, Sep 28, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Amherstview Jets took the lead against the Deseronto Storm in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 5-3 victory. A goal 3:40 into the the first period by Liam Vanburen proved to be the game winner, and powered Amherstview to the victory The Jets had gotten the advantage when Deseronto's Corey Prince was sent off for tripping. Rhys Webster provided the assist.Vanburen had a great game for Amherstview, netting two goals. The Storm's power play was ineffective against the Jets' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded. Amherstview racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 10 minors and one major for 55 minutes in penalty time. The Jets surpassed its season average of 32.0 penalty minutes per game. Amherstview forced Deseronto goalie Dan Corrigan to work between the pipes, taking 55 shots. The Jets were held back by their power play unit, which tallied two goals on 13 chances. The defensemen of Amherstview were also effective in the Storm's zone, and came away with two goals. Amherstview also got points from Dan Chadwick, who also registered one goal and one assist. Ryan Fletcher also scored for Amherstview. More assists for Amherstview came via Cassidy Bruni, who had two and Mark Christensen and Mitchell Murphy, who contributed one a piece. Deseronto forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 13 minors and one major for 61 minutes in penalty time. The Storm had been averaging 34.0 minutes in penalties per game. Deseronto was helped by Jared Boomhower, who had one goal. Boomhower scored 9:41 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Amherstview. Chris Rogalsky picked up the assist. Deseronto also got a goal from Bobby Breadman as well. Other players who recorded assists for Deseronto were Alex McConnell and Carson Nelles, who each chipped in one. The Jets' Troy Paquette stopped 22 shots out of the 25 that he faced. For Amherstview, Jake Hulton was ejected from the game. Corrigan rejected 50 shots on goal for the Storm. For Deseronto, Jesse Burtch and Brett Maracle were ejected from the contest.
