Cornwall blows out Nepean, 7-1

The Cornwall Colts had a four-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 7-1 win over the Nepean Raiders.

Cornwall was led by goalie Jordan Piccolino, who finished with 45 saves while allowing one goal. Piccolino managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.85 prior to the game.

Nepean's power play was ineffective against the Colts' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 5:31 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Cornwall forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and one major for 21 minutes in penalty time. The Colts had been averaging 19.0 minutes in penalties per game. Cornwall's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on seven Nepean power plays. The Colts kept the Raiders' goalie busy throughout the game, and Matt Zawadzki made 39 saves on 46 shots. Cornwall surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Colts have scored at the pace of 4.1 goals per game during the current campaign.

Cornwall was helped by Anthony Sanniti, who finished with one goal and one assist. Sanniti scored 14:01 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Cornwall. Stephen Johnson assisted on the tally. Cornwall additionally got points from Michael Pontarelli, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points and Marly Quince, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Cornwall also had goals scored by Brandon Howes, who had two and Grant Cooper and Mitch Zion, who each put in one. In addition, Cornwall received assists from Pietro Antonelli, who had one and Lawson MacDonald, Tanner Spink, and Kevin Hope, who each chipped in two.

Nepean racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 11 minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. The Raiders surpassed its season average of 20.0 penalty minutes per game. Nepean was held below its usual level of production. The Raiders average 3.8 goals per game. Nepean's offense rang up 46 shots on the Colts' net.

Cornwall registered two goals on 10 power play opportunities. The Colts ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Pierre Ouellette was ejected from the game. For the Raiders, Phil Nasca was ejected from the game.
