Huge game by Zion boosts Cornwall over Kemptville, 8-1

Mitch Zion had one goal and three assists to lead the Cornwall Colts to an 8-1 victory over the Kemptville 73s.

Zion beat Billy Cooper with a shot 6:16 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Cornwall. Marly Quince assisted on the tally. Zion dished an assist on Carl Belizario's goal that made the score 4-1 Cornwall at 4:42 into the second period. He then added assists on Michael Pontarelli's goal at 17:33 into the second and on Anthony Sanniti's goal at 1:06 into the third.

Cornwall forced 73s' goaltenders to work all game long, finishing with 39 shots and forcing 31 saves. Cooper made 12 stops and Jacob Tugnutt made 19. The Colts' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Kemptville power plays. Cornwall surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Colts average 4.0 goals per game.

Cornwall also got points from Belizario, who also tallied two goals and one assist, Pontarelli, who also had two goals and three assists to lead the team in points, Sanniti, who also registered one goal and one assist, and Kevin Hope, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Alexandre Gendron also scored for Cornwall. Other players who recorded assists for Cornwall were Stephen Johnson, who had two and Andrew Ming and Tanner Spink, who contributed one a piece.

Kemptville's penalty kill unit could not stop Cornwall's power play, which converted on three of four opportunities.

The 73s were led by Matt Tugnutt, who scored the team's only goal. Tugnutt scored short handed 11:28 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Kemptville was on a disadvantage when Nicholas Legault went off the ice for tripping. Cole Allard provided the assist.

Jordan Piccolino recorded 23 saves for the Colts. Cornwall ended with 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. For the Colts, Jake Martin was ejected from the game. The 73s ended with 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. For Kemptville, Stephen Cooney and Legault were ejected from the contest.
