Cumberland downs Hawkesbury, 6-3Navan Memorial Centre Sun, Feb 17, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The Cumberland Grads beat the Hawkesbury Hawks, 6-3. Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 14:55 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts. Cumberland forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and two majors for 24 minutes in penalty time. The Grads had been averaging 20.0 minutes in penalties per game. Cumberland made Hawks' netminders to work all game long, getting 44 shots and forcing 38 saves. Carmine Guerriero made 14 stops and Nicholas Newport made 24. The Grads bested their season scoring average. This season, Cumberland averages 3.1 goals per contest. The Grads were helped by Riley Hennigar, who tallied two goals and one assist. Hennigar scored the first of his two goals at 51 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Cumberland. Andrew DeBrincat assisted on the tally. Hennigar's next tally made the score 6-3 Cumberland with 16 seconds left in the third period. Matt Allan picked up the assist. Cumberland also got points from Colin Kruse, who also had one goal and one assist, Travis Douglas, who also grabbed two goals and one assist, and Matthew Morin, who also finished with one goal and two assists. Other players who recorded assists for Cumberland were Mark Golberg, who had two and Jeremy Xatruch and Nick Martin, who contributed one a piece. Hawkesbury racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 11 minors and two majors for 32 minutes in penalty time. The Hawks surpassed its season average of 28.0 penalty minutes per game. Cumberland was unable to stop Hawkesbury from sending pucks towards the net, and the Hawks eventually piled up 50 shots on goal. Hawkesbury was led by Trent Durocher, who registered two goals and one assist. Durocher scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 3:05 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Cumberland. A roughing penalty on DeBrincat had put the Hawks on the power play. Travis Meyer assisted on the tally. Durocher's next tally on the power play made the score 5-2 Cumberland with 14:54 left in the third period. Peter Kapelanski provided the assist. Hawkesbury also got a goal from Holden Anderson as well. More assists for Hawkesbury came via Roman Ammirato, who had one. Reilly Turner recorded 47 saves for the Grads. Cumberland registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. For the Grads, David Higgs and Martin were ejected from the contest. Hawkesbury registered one goal on three power play opportunities. Team's Ryan Kruss and Mac Blanchette were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
