Kemptville falls apart in second, loses to Cornwall, 8-0

The Kemptville 73s was within striking distance after one period, but the Cornwall Colts put the pedal down in the second en route to an 8-0 victory.

Jordan Piccolino frustrated Kemptville's offense all game, and stopped 28 shots en route to a shutout. Piccolino certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 3.01 entering the contest.

Marly Quince had two goals to lead Cornwall to victory. Quince scored at 12:55 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Cornwall and again while 1:13 into the third to make the score 5-0 Cornwall.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 1:43 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Colts made the 73s' goalies to work without much rest, totaling 69 shots and forcing 61 saves. Billy Cooper made 41 stops and Jacob Tugnutt made 20. Cornwall excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. The Colts found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. Cornwall averages 4.0 goals per game.

Cornwall also got points from Michael Pontarelli, who also tallied one goal and three assists, Mitch Zion, who also racked up one goal and two assists, and Stephen Johnson, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Cornwall also got a goal from Carl Belizario as well. Other players who recorded assists for Cornwall were Grant Cooper and Khalid Alli, who each chipped in one and Anthony Sanniti, Billy Ulrick, and Tanner Spink, who contributed two a piece.

Kemptville could not produce up to it normal offensive output. The 73s average 2.4 goals per game. Kemptville was hit hard by penalties in the contest, and totaled eight minors and one major for 21 minutes in penalty time.

The Colts totaled 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 2-for-9 on the power play. Cornwall ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Alli was ejected from the game. For the 73s, Stephen Cooney and Hayden Hanson were ejected from the contest.
