Cornwall rips Cumberland, 8-2

The Cornwall Colts had a four-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to an 8-2 win over the Cumberland Grads.

Cornwall got the win behind a great game by Michael Pontarelli, who had two goals and two assists. Pontarelli scored the first of his two goals at 19:12 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Cornwall. Mitch Zion provided the assist. Pontarelli's next tally made the score 8-2 Cornwall with 12:55 left in the third period. Zion assisted on the tally.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 9:30 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

The Colts' offense rang up 51 shots on Cumberland's net. Cornwall surpassed its usual scoring output this season. This season, the Colts average 3.9 goals per contest.

Cornwall additionally got points from Grant Cooper, who also registered one goal and one assist and Billy Ulrick, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Lawson MacDonald also scored for Cornwall. In addition, Cornwall received assists from Jake Martin and Kevin Hope, who contributed one a piece and Anthony Sanniti and Alexandre Gendron, who each chipped in two.

The Grads excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances.

Cumberland was led by Matt Allan, who finished with one goal. Allan scored 3:03 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Cornwall. Matthew Morin picked up the assist. Cumberland also got a goal from Mark Golberg as well. More assists for Cumberland came via Andrew DeBrincat, Justin Pelock, and Nick Martin, who contributed one a piece.

James Edwardson recorded 22 saves for Cornwall. The Colts ended with 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major. For Cornwall, Carl Belizario and Ulrick were ejected from the contest. The Grads' Devan Tremblay stopped 43 shots out of the 51 that he faced. Cumberland totaled 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors and two majors and went 1-for-4 on the power play. Team's Colin Kruse and David Higgs were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
