Smiths Falls stifles Cumberland's comeback, gains 4-3 victory

The Smiths Falls Bears came close to giving away a three-goal lead to the Cumberland Grads, but did just enough to escape with a 4-3 victory.

Smiths Falls led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Bears' Connor McLaren's scored on the power play at 1:52 in the second period to put Smiths Falls up 3-0.

The Bears' penalty kill excelled, as Smiths Falls gave up one goal despite allowing eight power plays.

The Bears were led by Patrick Sexton, who registered one goal and one assist. Sexton scored on the power play 10:49 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Smiths Falls. Smiths Falls earned a power play opportunity when Nicholas Leguerrier was put in the box for high sticking. Tyler Akeson provided the assist.

The Bears made Grads' goaltenders to work without much rest, getting 33 shots and forcing 29 saves. Devan Tremblay made 10 stops and Reilly Turner made 19.

Jake Butler also scored for Smiths Falls. Other players who recorded assists for Smiths Falls were Jesse Lussier and Peter Soligo, who each chipped in one and Nic Marchand and Karson McCartney, who contributed two a piece.

Smiths Falls was unable to stop Cumberland from sending pucks towards the net, and the Grads eventually piled up 45 shots on goal.

Cumberland was helped by Mark Golberg, who grabbed one goal. Golberg scored on the power play 7:23 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Smiths Falls. The Grads had taken the advantage when the Bears' Jeffrey Carroll got sent off for checking from behind. Eric Clitsome assisted on the tally. Cumberland additionally got points from Colin Kruse, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Cumberland also got a goal from Chris King as well. More assists for Cumberland came via David Higgs and Sean Naish, who each chipped in one.

Jimmy Howe rejected 42 shots on goal for Smiths Falls. The Bears incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Smiths Falls ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Carroll was ejected from the game. Cumberland incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
