Cornwall takes care of Hawkesbury early, wins 8-0

The Hawkesbury Hawks fell behind early, and the Cornwall Colts kept piling on the points on the way to an 8-0 victory.

Cornwall got the win with help from a great game by Mitch Zion, who had two goals and two assists. Zion scored the first of his two goals at 3:21 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Cornwall. Michael Pontarelli provided the assist. Zion's next tally made the score 2-0 Cornwall with 15:58 left in the first period. Pontarelli picked up the assist.

Jordan Piccolino spearheaded the defensive effort for the Colts, as he did not allow a puck past him and made 25 saves for the shutout. Piccolino certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 3.28 entering the contest.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 13:25 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Cornwall forced Hawkesbury's goaltenders to work in net, finishing with 49 shots and forcing 41 saves. Carmine Guerriero made 22 stops and Nicholas Newport made 19. The Colts stifled the Hawks' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Cornwall found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, the Colts average 3.8 goals per contest.

Cornwall additionally got points from Pontarelli, who also had three goals and two assists to lead the team in points and Stephen Johnson, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Cornwall also got a goal from Trent Durocher as well. More assists for Cornwall came via Parker Krol, Kevin Sarrazin, Pierre Ouellette, and Tanner Spink, who each chipped in one and Carl Belizario and Roman Ammirato, who contributed three a piece.

Hawkesbury's offense operated below it season average. The Hawks average 2.9 goals per game.

Cornwall totaled 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major and went 2-for-5 on the power play. The Colts ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jake Martin was ejected from the game. Hawkesbury totaled 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major and went 0-for-5 on the power play. For the Hawks, Mathieu Galipeau was ejected from the game.
