Ottawa survives Smiths Falls comeback, wins 2-1Smiths Falls Memorial Centre Sun, Dec 09, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Ottawa Senators survived a determined comeback attempt by the Smiths Falls Bears on the way to a 2-1 win. Ottawa took a 2-0 lead during the second period, only to have Smiths Falls storm back on a Karson McCartney goal 16:23 into the third period to pull to one goal down. The Senators were led by goalie Charlie Millen, who finished with 33 saves while allowing one goal. The solid play of Millen will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 2.27. The Bears' power play was ineffective against Ottawa's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded. The Senators stifled Smiths Falls' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Ottawa could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game. The Senators were helped by Owen Werthner, who tallied one goal. Werthner scored on the power play 13:30 into the second period to make the score Ottawa. Ottawa earned a power play opportunity when Jeffrey Carroll was put in the box for high sticking. Eric Witzel provided the assist. Ben Robillard also scored for Ottawa. More assists for Ottawa came via Hunter Racine, who had one and Ryan Collins, who had two. The Bears were held below their usual level of production. Smiths Falls averages 4.1 goals per game. The Bears' offense rang up 34 shots on the Senators' net. Smiths Falls was shut out on the power play, going scoring scoreless on nine chances with a man advantage. The Bears' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Smiths Falls finished with 22 penalty minutes. In addition, Smiths Falls received assists from Blaine Byron, who had one. Ottawa registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. The Senators ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Michael Evelyn was ejected from the game. Patrick Martin made 25 saves for the Bears on 27 shots.
