Kanata uses shootout to best Cumberland, 6-5 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Kanata Stallions defeated the Cumberland Grads in a shootout 6-5 (1-0 SO).

The two teams needed six turns to complete the shootout.

Kanata saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. The Stallions made the score 5-3 on a goal by Devin Fullum at 11:28 in the third period. Cumberland evened things up at 5-5 on a goal by David Higgs at 16:33 in the third period.

Kanata was led by Brandon Petrie, who racked up one goal and one assist. Petrie scored 8:34 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Kanata. Fullum provided the assist.

The Stallions kept the Grads' goalie busy throughout the game, and Devan Tremblay made 39 saves on 45 shots. Kanata's goal total was higher than its season average. This season, the Stallions average 3.2 goals per contest.

Kanata additionally got points from Fullum, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Reid Murphy also scored for Kanata. In addition, Kanata received assists from Fabian Walsh, who had two and JJ Hart, Nic LaBurn, Connor Cobbold, and Niles Owen, who each chipped in one.

Kanata was unable to stop Cumberland from sending pucks towards the net, and the Grads eventually piled up 44 shots on goal.

Cumberland was led by Eric Clitsome, who finished with one goal and two assists. Clitsome scored on the power play 59 seconds into the third period to make the score 3-3. The Grads had taken the advantage when the Stallions' Hart got sent off for slashing. Justin Pelock assisted on the tally. Cumberland also got a goal from Colin Kruse as well. Other players who recorded assists for Cumberland were Bobby Williams and Matt Allan, who contributed one a piece and Jeremy Xatruch and Zach Rodier, who each chipped in two.

Brayden St-Germain recorded 39 saves for Kanata. The Stallions incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Cumberland incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
