Cornwall beats Kemptville 11-1 as Pontarelli gets hat trick

The Kemptville 73s could not stop the Cornwall Colts' Michael Pontarelli, who tallied a hat trick in an 11-1 win.

Pontarelli notched his first tally 9:55 into the first period. He then added goals at 13:21 into the first and at 5:05 into the second.

Cornwall's Jordan Piccolino was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 30 saves and let only one puck past him. Piccolino managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 3.35 prior to the game.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 14:38 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Colts forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and two majors for 26 minutes in penalty time. Cornwall surpassed its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. The Colts stifled Kemptville's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The 73s were unable to stop Cornwall from sending pucks towards the net, and the Colts eventually piled up 55 shots on goal. Cornwall found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. The Colts average 3.7 goals per game.

Cornwall additionally got points from Carl Belizario, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Andrew Ming, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Roman Ammirato, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Cornwall also had goals scored by Alexandre Gendron, who had two and Jake Martin, who had three. In addition, Cornwall received assists from Pierre Ouellette, who had three, Marly Quince, who had four, Lawson MacDonald, Billy Ulrick, and Mitch Zion, who contributed one a piece, and Trent Durocher and Tanner Spink, who each chipped in two.

The Kemptville penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 10 minors and two majors for 30 minutes in penalty time. The 73s had been averaging 24.0 minutes in penalties per game. Kemptville's offense rang up 31 shots on Cornwall's net.

The Colts registered two goals on six power play opportunities. Team's Durocher and Kevin Sarrazin were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Billy Cooper recorded 44 saves for the 73s. Kemptville registered zero goals on six power play opportunities. For the 73s, Matt Shackell and Cody Hendsbee were ejected from the contest.
