Cornwall shrugs off penalties, upends Cumberland, 6-3Navan Memorial Centre Sun, Nov 18, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Cumberland Grads failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the Cornwall Colts shook off a number of penalties to win, 6-3. Cornwall was paced by Pierre Ouellette, who registered one goal. Ouellette scored 6:29 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Cornwall. Roman Ammirato picked up the assist. Cumberland was unable to stop the Colts from sending pucks towards the net, and Cornwall eventually piled up 41 shots on goal. The Colts found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, Cornwall averages 3.4 goals per contest. Cornwall additionally got points from Marly Quince, who also had one goal and one assist and Brandon Howes, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Cornwall also got a goal from Carl Belizario as well. More assists for Cornwall came via Michael Pontarelli, who had two and Trent Durocher, Alexandre Gendron, and Jake Martin, who each chipped in one. The Grads put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Colts to score on any of their eight power plays. Cumberland's offense rang up 32 shots on Cornwall's net. The Grads' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals. Cumberland was helped by David Higgs, who racked up one goal. Higgs scored 16:42 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Zach Rodier assisted on the tally. David Bennett also scored for Cumberland. In addition, Cumberland received assists from Colin Kruse, who had one and Justin Pelock, who had two. The Colts' James Edwardson stopped 29 shots out of the 32 that he faced. Cornwall incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Reilly Turner recorded 35 saves for the Grads. Cumberland incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors.
