Martin leads Smiths Falls to shutout victory over OttawaSmiths Falls Memorial Centre Fri, Oct 19, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
Patrick Martin recorded a shutout against the Ottawa Senators as the Smiths Falls Bears picked up a 3-0 win. Smiths Falls' penalty kill excelled, as the Bears gave up zero goals despite allowing nine power plays. Smiths Falls was sparked by Yannick Crete, who racked up one goal. Crete scored short handed 9:57 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Smiths Falls. The Bears found themselves down a man on Peter Soligo's holding. Chris Maniccia picked up the assist. Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 8:06 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts. The Smiths Falls penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 11 minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 19.0 minutes per game the Bears had been spending in the box. Smiths Falls stifled Ottawa's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Bears' offense rang up 32 shots on the Senators' net. Smiths Falls also got a goal from Nic Marchand as well. Other players who recorded assists for Smiths Falls were Ryan McCaughan, Ryan Eardley, Daniele Disipio, and Connor McLaren, who contributed one a piece. Ottawa racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 13 minors and one major for 31 minutes in penalty time. The Senators surpassed its season average of 23.0 penalty minutes per game. Ottawa could not produce up to it normal offensive output. The Senators put an average of 3.8 pucks into the net per game. Ottawa kept Smiths Falls' goalie busy throughout the game, and Martin made 31 saves on 31 shots. The Senators excelled on the penalty kill, only allowing the Bears to get one power play goal on 11 chances. Smiths Falls ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Adam Abu-Ali was ejected from the game. Alexandre Savard-Belanger rejected 29 shots on goal for Ottawa. Team's Stephen Inman and Derek Brown were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
