Cumberland holds on for 4-3 win against Smiths Falls

The Smiths Falls Bears tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but the Cumberland Grads held on for a 4-3 victory.

Cumberland made the score 4-1 on a goal by Eric Clitsome at 13:30 in the third period, and Smiths Falls got as close as 4-3 when Connor McLaren scored 18:21 into the third period.

The Grads' penalty kill excelled, as Cumberland gave up zero goals despite allowing 12 power plays.

The Grads forced the Bears' netminders to work in net, finishing with 31 shots and forcing 27 saves. Jimmy Howe made 16 stops and Patrick Martin made 11. Cumberland stifled Smiths Falls' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Grads could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game.

Cumberland was helped by David Higgs, who had one goal. Higgs scored 1:02 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Cumberland. Justin Pelock assisted on the tally. Cumberland also got a goal from Matthew Morin as well. Other players who recorded assists for Cumberland were Colin Kruse, who had two and Travis Douglas, Nick Martin, and Zach Rodier, who each chipped in one.

The Bears' offense rang up 43 shots on the Grads' net.

Smiths Falls was led by Nolan Trombetta, who grabbed two goals. Trombetta scored the first of his two goals at 14:18 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Cumberland. Nic Marchand picked up the assist. Trombetta's next tally made the score 4-2 Cumberland with 2:24 left in the third period. Marchand assisted on the tally. More assists for Smiths Falls came via Yannick Crete, Daniele Disipio, and Jesse Blais, who contributed one a piece.

Devan Tremblay made 40 saves for Cumberland on 43 shots. The Grads registered one goal on five power play opportunities. The Bears incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
