Cumberland beats Hawkesbury 5-3 after comeback scareNavan Memorial Centre Sun, Sep 30, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Hawkesbury Hawks tried their best to erase a four-goal deficit, but the Cumberland Grads would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-3. A goal by Nick Martin put Cumberland up 5-1 in the second period, but Hawkesbury pulled to within two on Brandon Bussey's tally 15:00 into the third period. The Grads' penalty kill excelled, as Cumberland gave up one goal despite allowing six power plays. The Grads were helped by Matthew Morin, who finished with two goals. Morin scored the first of his two goals at 2:26 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Cumberland. Colin Kruse provided the assist. Morin's next tally made the score 4-1 Cumberland with 17:35 left in the second period. Bobby Williams assisted on the tally. Jeremy Xatruch also scored for Cumberland. More assists for Cumberland came via Kevin Giroux, Eric Clitsome, Justin Pelock, Zach Rodier, and Mark Golberg, who contributed one a piece. The Hawks' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Cumberland power plays. Cumberland was unable to stop Hawkesbury from sending pucks towards the net, and the Hawks eventually piled up 45 shots on goal. Hawkesbury additionally got points from Pietro Antonelli, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Hawkesbury also got a goal from Yanik Laliberte as well. Other players who recorded assists for Hawkesbury were Patrick Crampton, who had one. Devan Tremblay recorded 42 saves for the Grads. Cumberland incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with 11 minors. Hawkesbury's starting goalie, Carmine Guerriero, made 17 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Brock Crossthwaite, who stopped seven shots. The Hawks ended with 19 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and one major. For Hawkesbury, Mac Blanchette and Justin Villeneuve were ejected from the contest.
