Ottawa vanquishes Nepean in shootout, 7-6 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Ottawa Senators defeated the Nepean Raiders in a shootout 7-6 (2-1 SO).

The shootout featured 10 attempts between both teams. Nepean got a shootout goal from Brent Norris. Ottawa's other shootout goal was scored by Eric Witzel.

The Senators saw a four-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. Ottawa made the score 4-0 on a goal by Justin Charbonneau at 15:24 in the second period. The Raiders evened things up at 6-6 on a goal by Vincent Llorca at 17:04 in the third period.

The Senators pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 12 penalty minutes.

Ottawa's offense rang up 32 shots on Nepean's net. The Senators found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, Ottawa averages 4.3 goals per contest.

The Senators were helped by Dylan Giberson, who had two goals. Giberson scored the first of his two goals at 2:29 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Ottawa. Michael Evelyn provided the assist. Giberson's next tally made the score 5-3 Ottawa with 10:13 left in the third period. Ottawa had gotten the advantage when the Raiders' Norris was sent off for high sticking. Evelyn picked up the assist. Ottawa also got points from Ryan Collins, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Ottawa also got a goal from Josh Gervais as well. Other players who recorded assists for Ottawa were Witzel, who had three and Cameron Roth, Mike Martin, Greg Jansz, and Derek Brown, who contributed one a piece.

The Senators were unable to stop Nepean from sending pucks towards the net, and the Raiders eventually piled up 43 shots on goal.

Nepean was led by Steven Johnston, who tallied two goals. Johnston scored the first of his two goals at 10:48 into the third period to make the score 6-4 Ottawa. Dalen Hedges provided the assist. Johnston's next tally made the score 6-5 Ottawa with 3:15 left in the third period. Kenneth Neil picked up the assist. Nepean additionally got points from Alex ODea, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Hedges, who also finished with one goal and two assists to lead the team in points, and Jesse Ferras, who also registered one goal and one assist. In addition, Nepean received assists from Jake Butler, who had two and Mike Milito and Tanner Williams, who each chipped in one.

Alexandre Savard-Belanger recorded 37 saves for Ottawa. The Senators registered one goal on six power play opportunities. Matt Zawadzki made 25 saves for the Raiders on 31 shots. Nepean incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
