Cornwall survives Smiths Falls comeback, wins 4-3Smiths Falls Memorial Centre Fri, Sep 28, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Smiths Falls Bears tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but the Cornwall Colts held on for a 4-3 victory. Cornwall took a 4-1 lead during the third period, only to have Smiths Falls storm back on a Connor McLaren goal 16:43 into the third period to pull to one goal down. Michael Pontarelli had two goals and two assists to lead the Colts. Pontarelli scored the first of his two goals at 5:37 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Cornwall. Brandon Howes assisted on the tally. Pontarelli's next tally made the score 3-0 Cornwall with 19:11 left in the second period. Kevin Hope picked up the assist. Cornwall put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Bears to score on any of their 10 power plays. Cornwall also got a goal from Roman Ammirato as well. In addition, Cornwall received assists from Trent Durocher, who had one. Smiths Falls was helped by Jeffrey Carroll, who registered one goal and one assist. Carroll scored 12:46 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Cornwall. McLaren assisted on the tally. Smiths Falls additionally got points from McLaren, who also had one goal and one assist. Daniele Disipio also scored for Smiths Falls. Other players who recorded assists for Smiths Falls were Tyler Akeson, who had two and Nic Marchand and Peter Soligo, who contributed one a piece. James Edwardson rejected 26 shots on goal for the Colts. Cornwall totaled 23 minutes in penalty time with nine minors and one major and went 1-for-6 on the power play. Team's Marly Quince and Stephen Johnson were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. The Bears' Patrick Martin stopped 20 shots out of the 24 that he faced. Smiths Falls incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
