Cumberland outlasts Kanata, 5-3

The game between the Cumberland Grads and the Kanata Stallions was tight through all 60 minutes, but in the end Cumberland emerged with a 5-3 win.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Nick Martin's goal in the second period proved to be the difference maker.

The Grads got the win on the strength of a great game by Mark Golberg, who had two goals and one assist. Golberg scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 10:02 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Cumberland. Cumberland had gained a power play chance when Neil Penner was whistled for high sticking. Zach Rodier assisted on the tally. Golberg's next tally on the power play made the score 5-3 Cumberland with 17 seconds left in the third period. David Higgs picked up the assist.

The Grads was effective with a man advantage, and put in two goals while on the power play.

Cumberland additionally got points from Martin, who also racked up one goal and two assists. David Bennett also scored for Cumberland. More assists for Cumberland came via Bobby Williams, who had two and Philippe Paquette and Eric Clitsome, who each chipped in one.

Cumberland was unable to stop Kanata from sending pucks towards the net, and the Stallions eventually piled up 39 shots on goal.

Kanata was led by Brandon Petrie, who tallied one goal and one assist. Petrie scored on the power play 14:01 into the first period to make the score 2-2. The Stallions had gotten the advantage when the Grads' Martin Lavallee was sent off for holding. Curtis Watson provided the assist. Kanata also got a goal from Nic LaBurn as well. In addition, Kanata received assists from Carl-Philippe Ouimet, Derian Plouffe, and Fabian Walsh, who contributed one a piece.

Devan Tremblay rejected 36 shots on goal for Cumberland. The Grads incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Brandon Lane recorded 24 saves for Kanata. The Stallions incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
