Amarillo erases deficit to stun Topeka, 8-6

Undaunted by a four-goal deficit, the Amarillo Bulls battled back to claim an 8-6 victory over the Topeka RoadRunners.

Amarillo let multiple leads slip away before eventually digging out of a four hole to pick up the win. The Bulls took a 1-0 advantage on a goal by John Rey at 6:56 in the first period. Amarillo found itself down 5-1 after Topeka's Jake Lynes put the puck home at 6:25 in the second period. After knotting things up at 6-6 on a goal by Ben Bahe at 1:40 in the third, the Bulls got the game-winner from Ryan Taylor at 3:30 in the third period.

The win gave Amarillo a 1-0 lead in the best of five series.

Luke Jenkins was all over the ice for the Bulls, as he racked up two goals in the win. Jenkins found the back of the net 18:01 into the second period to make the score 5-5 and again while 20:00 into the third to make the score 8-6 Amarillo.

Amarillo made RoadRunners' netminders to work without much rest, firing 35 shots and forcing 27 saves. Peter Traber made 27 stops and Collin LeMay made 0. The Bulls excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances. Amarillo got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed three goals during the game.

Amarillo also got points from Rey, who also finished with one goal and two assists, Brooks Behling, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Ryan Cole, who also finished with one goal and one assist, and Greg Gibson, who also grabbed one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. TJ Sarcona also scored for Amarillo. In addition, Amarillo received assists from Karl Beckman, who had one and Mike Erickson and Joe Kozlak, who contributed two a piece.

Topeka additionally got points from Kyle Sharkey, who also racked up one goal and three assists to lead the team in points and Brian Christie, who also had one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Topeka were Sean Gaffney, Anders Schultz, Joe Van Antwerp, and Chris Bond, who each chipped in one.

Mike Taffe took the win and made 18 saves before being replaced by Gregg Gruehl who made four saves. The Bulls incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. The RoadRunners incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with 11 minors.
