Pensacola hangs on, beats Knoxville 1-0

The Pensacola Ice Flyers beat the Knoxville Ice Bears, 1-0, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Paul Holder provided Pensacola with the game-winning tally when he scored 7:43 into the the first period. Ryan Salvis assisted on the tally.

Steve Christie frustrated Knoxville's offense all game, and stopped 29 shots en route to a shutout. Christie managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 0.5 prior to the game.

The Ice Flyers' penalty kill excelled, as Pensacola gave up zero goals despite allowing six power plays.

The Ice Flyers stifled the Ice Bears' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Pensacola was hit hard by penalties in the contest, and totaled seven minors and one major for 19 minutes in penalty time. By firing 38 shots on goal, the Ice Flyers exceeded the 33.0 shots they average per game this year.

Knoxville forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and one major for 21 minutes in penalty time. The Ice Bears had been averaging 12.0 minutes in penalties per game. Knoxville excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances. The Ice Bears could not produce up to they normal offensive output. Knoxville averages 2.8 goals per game.

The Ice Bears were led by Emery Olauson, who took six shots.

Knoxville's Kyle Rank stopped 37 shots out of the 38 that he faced.
