Longland's big game bests Thorold in 4-1 St. Catharines win

Behind a great game by Curtis Longland, who had one goal and two assists, the St. Catharines Falcons defeated the Thorold Blackhawks, 4-1.

Longland got on the board by slotting home a power play goal 3:55 into the second period to make the score 2-1 St. Catharines. St. Catharines had gotten the advantage when Thorold's Kevin Lavoie was sent off for hooking. Jimmy Sheehan picked up the assist. Longland dished an assist on Ben Dubois' goal that made the score 1-0 St. Catharines at 2:28 into the first period. He added another helper on Johnson Andrews' goal that made the score 4-1 St. Catharines at 16:04 into the third period.

The win gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series.

St. Catharines was led by goalie Brad Pope, who finished with 31 saves while allowing one goal.

The Falcons stifled the Blackhawks' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man.

St. Catharines also got a goal from Matt Moes as well. In addition, St. Catharines received assists from Kenny Bradford, who had two and Jesse Miller and Spencer DeWolfe, who each chipped in one.

St. Catharines was unable to stop Thorold from sending pucks towards the net, and the Blackhawks eventually piled up 32 shots on goal. Thorold's penalty kill unit could not stop the Falcons' power play, which converted on three of five opportunities.

The Blackhawks were led by Tanner Hildebrandt, who scored the team's only goal. Hildebrandt scored 11:45 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Kelly Barchan provided the assist.

St. Catharines incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Thorold's Evan Buitenhuis stopped 26 shots out of the 30 that he faced. The Blackhawks incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. For Thorold, Dan Chudobiak was ejected from the game.
