Brantford wins tough contest against Cambridge, 4-2

The Brantford Golden Eagles gutted out a close 4-2 win against the Cambridge Winter Hawks.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Trent Hawke's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

After the loss made the series score 3-2 in the best of seven series, Cambridge faces elimination next time out.

Matt Quilty had a great game for Brantford, netting two goals. Quilty scored on the power play at 12:34 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Brantford and again while on the power play 19:28 into the second to make the score 2-0 Brantford.

The Golden Eagles pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 16 penalty minutes.

Brantford stifled the Winter Hawks' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Golden Eagles' offense rang up 54 shots on Cambridge's net.

Brantford also got a goal from Mike Rebry as well. More assists for Brantford came via Tyler Norrie, who had two and Jeff Swift, Mitch Brown, Mike Riley, Dillan Walker, and Brandon Montour, who each chipped in one.

The Winter Hawks were helped by Ryan Clarke, who registered one goal. Clarke scored 36 seconds into the third period to make the score 2-1 Brantford. Brandon Zimmerman assisted on the tally. Cody Gratton also scored for Cambridge. Other players who recorded assists for Cambridge were Trevor Hache, Darcy Meyer, and Michael Christou, who contributed one a piece.

Bryce O Hagan made 27 saves for Brantford on 29 shots. The Golden Eagles registered three goals on 11 power play opportunities. Brantford ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Brett Appio was ejected from the game. Brendan Gorecki rejected 50 shots on goal for Cambridge. The Winter Hawks incurred 30 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors. Team's Brennon Pearce and Josh Timpano were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
