Granite City holds on for 5-4 win against MinnesotaArmadillo Deck Arena East Fri, Mar 16, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Minnesota Flying Aces tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Granite City Lumberjacks would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-4. Granite City made the score 5-3 on a goal by Nick LaRue at 19:03 in the second period, and Minnesota got as close as 5-4 when Jarrett Pfeiffer scored 8:49 into the third period. After the loss made the series score 1-0 in the best of three series, the Flying Aces face elimination next time out. LaRue had a great game for the Lumberjacks, netting two goals. Granite City excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances. The Lumberjacks kept Minnesota's goalie busy throughout the game, and Tyler Muehler made 26 saves on 31 shots. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals. Granite City additionally got points from Zac Sikich, who also grabbed one goal and two assists. TJ Christenson also scored for Granite City. More assists for Granite City came via Trevor Ness, who had two and Jake Peterson, DJ Vold, Riley Bengtson, Tyler Stoller, Blayne Ellson, and Brian Richert, who each chipped in one. Minnesota also got a goal from Tyler Pionk as well. In addition, Minnesota received assists from Cote Dickerson, who had two and Shota Niwa, Paul Sorenson, and Kyle Bonstrom, who contributed one a piece. Granite City's Matt Grove stopped 25 shots out of the 29 that he faced. The Lumberjacks incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. The Flying Aces incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
