Cambridge holds on for 4-3 win against GuelphSleeman Centre Thu, Mar 08, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Guelph Hurricanes tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Cambridge Winter Hawks held on for a 4-3 victory. Cambridge took a 4-2 lead during the third period, only to have Guelph storm back on a Chris Zubac goal 12:50 into the third period to pull to one goal down. After the loss made the series score 1-3 in the best of seven series, the Hurricanes face elimination next time out. The Winter Hawks pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 18 penalty minutes. Cambridge's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Guelph power plays. The Winter Hawks were helped by Brennon Pearce, who grabbed one goal. Pearce scored 9:41 into the third period to make the score Cambridge. Ryan Clarke picked up the assist. Cambridge also got a goal from Darcy Meyer as well. In addition, Cambridge received assists from Cameron Pentsa, who had one and Cody Gratton and Josh Timpano, who each chipped in two. Guelph put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Cambridge to score on any of its four power plays. The Hurricanes were led by Mike Charbonneau, who racked up two goals. Charbonneau scored the first of his two goals at 7:43 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Guelph. Shane Kinsella assisted on the tally. Charbonneau's next tally made the score 2-0 Guelph with 8:56 left in the first period. Nic MacEachern picked up the assist. Other players who recorded assists for Guelph were Mark Bell, Chad Bauman, and Chris Taylor, who contributed one a piece. The Winter Hawks' Brendan Gorecki stopped 22 shots out of the 25 that he faced. Colin Furlong rejected 25 shots on goal for Guelph. The Hurricanes incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
