Welland falls to Thorold in overtime, 7-6 (OT)

The Thorold Blackhawks pulled out a 7-6 (OT) overtime victory over the Welland Jr. Canadians on a clutch goal by Robert MacFarlane.

After the loss made the series score 1-3 in the best of seven series, Welland faces elimination next time out.

Although Thorold was up by as many as three goals in the second period, the Jr. Canadians kept the game interesting by staging a comeback that ultimately fell short. Welland pulled to within 6-5 on a power play goal by Robbie Lepine at 3:37 in the third period.

MacFarlane was all over the ice for the Blackhawks, as he tallied one goal and two assists in the win. MacFarlane scored 18:25 into overtime to make the score 7-6 Thorold. Tanner Hildebrandt picked up the assist.

The Jr. Canadians were unable to stop Thorold from sending pucks towards the net, and the Blackhawks eventually piled up 49 shots on goal. Thorold could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 40 minutes in penalties during the game. The Blackhawks were held back by their power play unit, which tallied two goals on nine chances. Thorold's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Thorold also got points from Joel Forestell, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Robert Bentavegna, who also registered one goal and one assist, and Brandon Kerr, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Thorold also had goals scored by Owen Sobchak, who had one and Greg Cerilli, who had two. Other players who recorded assists for Thorold were Mike Purcell, Taylor D`Andrea, and Tanner Pagendam, who each chipped in one.

Welland forced the Blackhawks goalie Evan Buitenhuis to work between the pipes, taking 47 shots. The Jr. Canadians were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 30 penalty minutes.

Welland additionally got points from Anthony Marra, who also had one goal and two assists and Mike Marquis, who also racked up one goal and two assists. Welland also got a goal from Adam Mataya as well. In addition, Welland received assists from Drake Lynds, who had two and Mack Seebach and Kevin LaRocque, who contributed one a piece.

Thorold's Buitenhuis stopped 41 shots out of the 47 that he faced. For the Blackhawks, Colt Kennedy and Kelly Barchan were ejected from the contest. Chris McDougall made 42 saves for Welland on 49 shots. The Jr. Canadians registered three goals on 13 power play opportunities. For Welland, Joe Saracini was ejected from the game.
