Whitby squeaks by Cobourg, 5-4Cobourg Community Centre Tue, Feb 28, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Whitby Fury gutted out a close 5-4 win against the Cobourg Cougars. Whitby gained the winning advantage on a goal by Matt Davis 12:40 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer. The win by the Fury clinched the best of seven series at 4-1. Davis had two goals and one assist to lead Whitby. Davis scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 7:39 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Whitby. The Fury earned a power play opportunity when Anton Zupancic was put in the box for elbowing. Devin Shore picked up the assist. Davis' next tally on the power play made the score 5-4 Whitby with 7:20 left in the third period. Shore provided the assist. Whitby forced Cougars' goaltenders to work all game long, totaling 48 shots and forcing 43 saves. Keinan Brown made 42 stops and Emerson Verrier made one. The Fury cashed in on power play opportunities, scoring two goals on three chances. Connor Hale also scored for Whitby. More assists for Whitby came via Taylor Best, who had two and Steven Deeg and Kevin Stevens, who contributed one a piece. Cobourg was helped by Nick Marinac, who tallied one goal and two assists. Marinac scored on the power play six seconds into the third period to make the score 3-3. Taylor Pererowski assisted on the tally. Cobourg additionally got points from Evan Jasper, who also finished with one goal and two assists and Justin Danforth, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Cobourg also got a goal from Colbie Andrews as well. Tyler Feaver made 25 saves for Whitby on 29 shots. The Fury incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors. The Cougars incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with three minors.
