Huge game by Weidner boosts Newmarket over Markham, 8-2

Jake Weidner had two goals and one assist to lead the Newmarket Hurricanes to an 8-2 victory over the Markham Waxers.

Weidner found the back of the net 4:35 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Newmarket and again while 15:07 into the second to make the score 4-2 Newmarket.

After the loss made the series score 3-2 in the best of seven series, Markham faces elimination next time out.

Newmarket forced the Waxers' goaltenders to work all game long, launching 50 shots and forcing 42 saves. Chris Perugini made 37 stops and Hunter Jackson made five. The Hurricanes' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Newmarket additionally got points from Tyler Mort, who also grabbed one goal and one assist and Tyson LeBlanc, who also had one goal and three assists. Phil Grainger also scored for Newmarket. In addition, Newmarket received assists from Jeff DiNallo, Morgan Bonner, and Ian Farrell, who each chipped in one and Matt Dineen and Chris Chiste, who contributed two a piece.

Markham's offense rang up 42 shots on Newmarket's net. The Waxers could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 14 minutes in penalties during the game.

Markham was helped by Sammy Banga, who finished with one goal. Banga scored on the power play 8:01 into the second period to make the score 2-2. The Waxers had taken the advantage when the Hurricanes' Daniel Leavens got sent off for high sticking. Alex Leader picked up the assist. Markham also got a goal from Marcus Ruberto as well. More assists for Markham came via Adam DiBrina, Robert Mann, and Andrew Radjenovic, who each chipped in one.

Newmarket's Matthew Wintjes stopped 40 shots out of the 42 that he faced. The Hurricanes incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Markham registered one goal on five power play opportunities.
