Markham uses early goal to top Newmarket, 3-1

Markham Centennial Centre    Tue, Feb 28, 2012

The Markham Waxers beat the Newmarket Hurricanes, 3-1, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Markham took over the lead for good with a goal by Patrick Stillar at 13:27 in the first period. A high sticking penalty on Matt LeMasurier had put the Waxers on the power play. Sammy Banga provided the assist.

With the win, Markham evened the series at 2-2 in the best of seven showdown.

Andrew Radjenovic had one goal and two assists to lead the Waxers. Radjenovic scored 3:16 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Markham. Calvin Higley assisted on the tally.

Markham's Chris Perugini was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 42 saves and let only one puck past him. The solid play of Perugini will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 1.45.

The Waxers put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Newmarket to score on any of its three power plays. Markham's offense rang up 39 shots on the Hurricanes' net.

Tyler Shaw also scored for Markham. More assists for Markham came via Elliott Burlon and Robert Mann, who contributed one a piece.

Newmarket's offense rang up 43 shots on the Waxers' net.

The Hurricanes were led by Phil Grainger, who scored the team's only goal. Grainger scored 5:21 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Markham. Bowman Webster picked up the assist.
