Cobourg blows out Whitby, 6-2Cobourg Community Centre Sat, Feb 25, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Cobourg Cougars were firing on all cylinders against the Whitby Fury, and when the final buzzer sounded Cougars emerged with a 6-2 win. The win moved Cobourg to down 2-1 in the best of seven series. Whitby's power play was ineffective against the Cougars' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded. Cobourg was sparked by Jared Martin, who registered one goal and one assist. Martin scored on the power play 13:39 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Cobourg. The Cougars had gained a power play chance when Chris Raguseo was whistled for tripping. Nick Marinac provided the assist. Cobourg made Fury's goaltenders to work in net, firing 34 shots and forcing 28 saves. Tyler Feaver made 16 stops and Donald Edwards made 12. The Cougars stifled the Fury's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Cobourg's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Cougars finished with 18 penalty minutes. The leading offender was Brett Gilmour, who totaled four minutes in penalty time with two minors. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with three goals. Cobourg additionally got points from Martin, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Cobourg included Taylor Pererowski, who had two and Dylan Goddard, Colbie Andrews, and Dylon McMahon, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Cobourg were Anton Zupancic, who had two and Jake Flegel, Justin Danforth, and Derek Foote, who contributed one each. Whitby's normally stingy defense allowed more goals than usual. The Fury average two goals allowed per game. Whitby was led by Jack Lewis, who racked up one goal and one assist. Lewis scored 57 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Whitby. Ryan Kirkup picked up the assist. Whitby also got points from Lewis, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Whitby got a goal from Matt Davis as well. More assists for Whitby came via Brian Hubers, who had one. Keinan Brown turned away 23 pucks between the pipes for Cobourg. The Cougars registered two goals on four power play opportunities. The Fury incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
