Buffalo blows out Oakville, 4-1OPJHL Head Office Sun, Feb 26, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Buffalo Jr. Sabres were firing on all cylinders against the Oakville Blades, and when the final buzzer sounded Jr. Sabres emerged with a 4-1 win. After the loss made the series score 3-1 in the best of seven series, Oakville faces elimination next time out. Buffalo got the win on the strength of a great game by Ryan Schmelzer, who had one goal and two assists. Schmelzer scored on the power play 2:24 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Buffalo. The Jr. Sabres had gained a power play chance when Aidan Orbinski was whistled for holding stick. Rocky Gruttadauria picked up the assist. Buffalo was led by goalie Parker Gahagen, who finished with 35 saves while allowing one goal. Gahagen managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.3 prior to the game. The Jr. Sabres racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and one major for 19 minutes in penalty time. Buffalo had been averaging 17 minutes in penalties per game. The Jr. Sabres put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Blades to score on any of their four power plays. Buffalo kept Oakville's goalie busy throughout the game, and James Prigione made 33 saves on 37 shots. Buffalo also got points from Josh Kielich, who also grabbed one goal and one assist and Schmelzer, who also finished with one goal and two assists. Max Mikowski also scored for Buffalo. Other players who recorded assists for Buffalo were Jacob Ledyard and Mark Arnone, who each chipped in one. The the Blades penalty box was a busy place as the team totaled seven minors and one major for 19 minutes in penalty time. Oakville surpassed its season average of 16 penalty minutes per game. The Blades' offense operated below they season average. Oakville averages three goals per game. The Blades' offense efficiently hummed along to the tune of 36 shots put on the Jr. Sabres' net. Oakville was led by Tyler Karius, who scored the team's only goal. Karius scored 16:39 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Buffalo. Martin Kudla provided the assist. Buffalo registered one goal on five power play opportunities. For the Jr. Sabres, Ryan Stayner was ejected from the game. The Blades ran into disciplinary problems during the contest, and Tye Campbell was ejected from the game.
