New Hamburg beats Aylmer 4-2 after comeback scare

The Aylmer Spitfires tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the New Hamburg Firebirds would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 4-2.

New Hamburg took a 4-1 lead during the third period, only to have Aylmer storm back on a Scott Mugford goal 18:16 into the third period to pull to two goals down.

The win by the Firebirds clinched the best of seven series at 2-4.

New Hamburg was paced by Damien Parent, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Parent scored 3:49 into the third period to make the score 3-1 New Hamburg. Brock Yantzi provided the assist.

The Firebirds forced the Spitfires goalie Brian Valentine to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots.

Sean Kienapple also scored for New Hamburg. In addition, New Hamburg received assists from Sam Murray, Kory Nowak, and Blake Jordan, who contributed one a piece.

Aylmer's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six New Hamburg power plays. The Spitfires kept New Hamburg's goalie busy throughout the game, and Brodij Gerryts made 31 saves on 33 shots.

Aylmer also got a goal from Adam Brisson as well. Other players who recorded assists for Aylmer were Todd Laurindo, Rhys Thornton, and Coy Kulich, who each chipped in one.

The Firebirds incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Valentine recorded 30 saves for Aylmer. The Spitfires incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
