Hagersville squeaks by Burford, 4-2

The Hagersville Hawks gutted out a close 4-2 win against the Burford Bulldogs.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Jesse Ross' goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

The win by Hagersville clinched the best of seven series at 0-4.

Aleck Boyd was all over the ice for the Hawks, as he registered two goals in the win. Boyd scored on the power play at 31 seconds into the second period to make the score 1-0 Hagersville and again while 5:30 into the second to make the score 2-1 Hagersville.

Hagersville's penalty kill excelled, as the Hawks gave up zero goals despite allowing six power plays.

Hagersville stifled Burford's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Hawks could not produce up to they normal offensive output. Hagersville puts an average of six pucks into the net per game. The Hawks' offense efficiently hummed along to the tune of 41 shots put on the Bulldogs' net. Hagersville was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 14 penalty minutes. The leading offender was Boyd, who totaled four minutes in penalty time with two minors.

Hagersville also got points from Ross, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Hagersville got a goal from Eric Drehmer as well. Other players who recorded assists for Hagersville were Deacan Krause, who had two and Magwood Connor, Derek Medeiros, and Dakota Powless, who contributed one each.

Burford was helped by Nick Longhurst, who tallied one goal. Longhurst scored 11:21 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Jim Salatas assisted on the tally. Adam Wood also scored for Burford. In addition, Burford received assists from Eric Lucente and Tyler MacLaughlin, who each chipped in one.

Jordan Ironside made 24 saves for the Hawks on 26 shots. Hagersville registered one goal on six power play opportunities. For the Hawks, Medeiros, Ross, and Powless were ejected from the contest. Justin Garner recorded 37 saves for the Bulldogs. Burford incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. For the Bulldogs, Lucente was ejected from the game.
