Hagersville wins tough contest against Burford, 6-4

The Hagersville Hawks gutted out a close 6-4 win against the Burford Bulldogs.

Hagersville gained the winning advantage on a goal by Aleck Boyd 16:37 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer.

After the loss made the series score 3-0 in the best of seven series, Burford faces elimination next time out.

Mike Gruhl was all over the ice for the Hawks, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Gruhl scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 16:55 into the first period to make the score 1-1. A hooking penalty on Peter Janeck had put Hagersville on the power play. Jesse Ross provided the assist. Gruhl's next tally on the power play made the score 2-1 Hagersville with 9:53 left in the second period. The Hawks earned a power play opportunity when Cale Burbridge was put in the box for hooking. Dakota Powless picked up the assist.

Both teams had a hard time staying out of the box, and they combined for 14 penalties during the game.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 3:32 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Hagersville did not rack up many penalties in the contest, and ended with six minors and one major for 17 minutes in penalty time. The Hawks ended up below their season average of 22 penalty minutes per game. Hagersville's offense efficiently hummed along to the tune of 51 shots put on the Bulldogs' net. The Hawks cashed in on power play opportunities, scoring three goals on five chances.

Hagersville additionally got points from Eric Drehmer, who also tallied one goal and two assists, Gruhl, who also grabbed two goals and one assist, Ross, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Boyd, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Rob Clause also scored for Hagersville. Other players who recorded assists for Hagersville were Derek Medeiros, who had two and Brock McEachern and John Monture, who contributed one each.

Burford's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Bulldogs finished with 17 penalty minutes. The leading offender was Tommy Smith, who totaled seven minutes in penalty time with one minor and one major.

Burford was led by Tyler MacLaughlin, who had two goals. MacLaughlin scored the first of his two goals at 17:28 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Hagersville. Kyle Chaney provided the assist. MacLaughlin's next tally made the score 4-3 Burford with 16:28 left in the third period. Chaney picked up the assist. Burford got a goal from Tyler Vandenbussche as well. More assists for Burford came via Dave Money, who had one.

Jordan Ironside recorded 23 saves for Hagersville. For the Hawks, Kyle Parsons was ejected from the game. The Bulldogs' Justin Garner stopped 45 shots out of the 50 that he faced. Burford registered one goal on five power play opportunities. The Bulldogs ran into disciplinary problems during the contest, and Smith was ejected from the game.
