Exeter survives penalties, beats North Middlesex, 5-2

Despite having to fight off several power plays, the Exeter Hawks were able to defeat the North Middlesex Stars, 5-2.

The win by Exeter clinched the best of seven series at 4-1.

The referees were busy during the game, as 18 penalties were assessed during the course of the contest.

The Hawks were sparked by Kalvin Thornton, who had one goal and one assist. Thornton scored 5:47 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Exeter. Rob Brock picked up the assist.

Exeter was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 30 penalty minutes. The leading offender was Hayden Cann, who totaled 12 minutes in penalty time with one minor and one misconduct.

Exeter additionally got points from Matthew Ross, who also registered one goal and one assist and Thornton, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Exeter got a goal from Alex Garon as well. Other players who recorded assists for Exeter were Dylan Bedard and John Kingma, who contributed one each and Trevor Thornton and Steve Gingerich, who each chipped in two.

North Middlesex kept the Hawks' goalie busy throughout the game, and Aaron Bedard made 35 saves on 37 shots. The Stars could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 26 minutes in penalties during the game. The leading offender was Kyle Bent, who totaled 14 minutes in penalty time with two minors and one misconduct.

North Middlesex was helped by Tyler Kettler, who grabbed one goal. Kettler scored 4:05 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Exeter. Chris Salmi provided the assist. Mike Slegers also scored for North Middlesex. More assists for North Middlesex came via Mike Sharpe and Tommy Prokes, who contributed one each.

Exeter registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. Bobby Raine recorded 24 saves for the Stars. North Middlesex registered one goal on seven power play opportunities.
