Lekun nets hat trick, leads Walkerton to 5-1 win over Wingham

Eric Lekun netted a hat trick to lead the Walkerton Hawks over the Wingham Ironmen, 5-1.

Lekun notched his first tally 10:46 into the first period. He then added goals at 7:41 into the second and at 8:47 into the third.

After the loss made the series score 3-0 in the best of seven series, Wingham faces elimination next time out.

Walkerton was led by goalie Jeff Flagler, who finished with 32 saves while allowing one goal. The solid play of Flagler will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 1.58.

The Ironmen were unable to stop the Hawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Walkerton eventually piled up 34 shots on goal. The Hawks excelled on the penalty kill, only allowing Wingham to get one power play goal on 12 chances. Walkerton could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 38 minutes in penalties during the game. The leading offender was Andrew Graham, who totaled 16 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one misconduct.

Walkerton got a goal from Shane MacDonald as well. In addition, Walkerton received assists from Jay Thomson, Adam Alexander, and Ryan Stroz, who contributed one each and Jordan Turcotte, Andy Mitchell, and Haden Campbell, who each chipped in two.

The Ironmen were held below their usual level of production. Wingham averages three goals per game. The Ironmen's offense efficiently hummed along to the tune of 33 shots put on the Hawks' net.

Wingham was led by Steve Hutchison, who scored the team's only goal. Hutchison scored on the power play 6:20 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Walkerton. A cross checking penalty on Graham had put the Ironmen on the power play. Aaron Armstrong picked up the assist.

Walkerton registered one goal on two power play opportunities. Jeff Puddephatt made 29 saves for the Ironmen on 34 shots. Wingham incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
