Stayner beats Midland 6-5 after comeback scare

The Stayner Siskins survived a determined comeback attempt by the Midland Flyers on the way to a 6-5 win.

Stayner made the score 6-4 on a goal by Mike Mullay at 1:03 in the third period, and Midland got as close as 6-5 when Cody Beasley scored 3:33 into the third period.

The win gave the Siskins a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series.

Stayner was paced on offense by Riley Brooks and Cody Brown, who combined for seven points. Brooks tallied one goal and three assists and Brown also notched two goals and one assist.

The Siskins kept the Flyers' goalie busy throughout the game, and Jacob Schandlen made 46 saves on 52 shots.

Stayner additionally got points from Mullay, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Tyler Happeney, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Stayner got a goal from Bradley Latour as well. Other players who recorded assists for Stayner were Evan MacDonald, Corey De Rose, William Gerow, and Kurtis Sander, who each chipped in one.

Stayner was unable to stop Midland from sending pucks towards the net, and the Flyers eventually piled up 38 shots on goal. Midland's defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. The Flyers average two goals allowed per game.

Midland was led by Curtis Warren, who grabbed two goals and one assist. Warren scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 2:44 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Midland.
