Huge game by Kalk boosts North York over Toronto, 11-2

Corey Kalk was all over the ice for the North York Rangers, as he tallied two goals and three assists in North York's 11-2 win over the Toronto Junior Canadiens.

Kalk found the back of the net 7:10 into the second period to make the score 3-0 North York and again while 7:16 into the third to make the score 7-2 North York.

The win gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead in the best of five series.

Toronto was doomed by its poor performance on special teams, as North York was able to score six times while on the power play.

The Rangers made the Junior Canadiens' goalies to work without much rest, totaling 49 shots and forcing 38 saves. Jamie Phillips made 27 stops and Eric Szymczyk made 11. North York outdid its season average for goals scored. This season, the Rangers average four goals per contest. North York could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 34 minutes in penalties during the game.

North York additionally got points from Mark Friedman, who also finished with one goal and two assists, Adam Valadao, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Chris Aitcheson, who also tallied one goal and three assists, Mark Gazdic, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, and Nicholas Geiser, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Others who scored for North York included BJ Salerno, who had two and Ernesto Valente and Skyler Mota, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for North York were Danny Harquail, Luke Colavecchia, Brett Seldon, Giancarlo Scarpone, Spencer Murphy, and Scott Maguire, who contributed one each.

Toronto did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Junior Canadiens put an average of four pucks into the net per game. Toronto kept the Rangers' goalie busy throughout the game, and Leo Podolsky made 30 saves on 32 shots. The Junior Canadiens could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 72 minutes in penalties during the game. The leading offender was Michael Whiteside, who totaled 16 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one misconduct.

Toronto was helped by Bryson Cianfrone, who registered one goal. Cianfrone scored 3:06 into the third period to make the score 5-2 North York. Daniel Lombardi picked up the assist. Matt Carey also scored for Toronto. More assists for Toronto came via David Friedmann, Matthew Zanardo, and Matt Galati, who each chipped in one.

The Junior Canadiens registered one goal on four power play opportunities.
