Central Wisconsin erases deficit to stun Michigan, 6-5

The Central Wisconsin Saints climbed out of a two-goal hole to beat the Michigan Ice Dogs, 6-5.

Central Wisconsin let multiple leads slip away before eventually digging out of a two hole to pick up the win. The Saints took a 1-0 advantage on a goal by Kenyon Godfrey at 2:00 in the first period. Central Wisconsin went down 5-3 after Michigan's James Subu put the puck home short handed at 11:35 in the second period. After evening things up at 5-5 on a goal by Colin Van Hauter at 2:52 in the third, the Saints got the game-winner from Kyle Harnish at 14:14 in the third period.

Central Wisconsin forced the Ice Dogs goalie Eric Matych to work between the pipes, taking 53 shots.

Central Wisconsin additionally got points from Harnish, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, Joseph Mitch, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Van Hauter, who also had one goal and one assist, and Max Culp, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Jeremy Ebert also scored for Central Wisconsin. More assists for Central Wisconsin came via Chase Engdahl, Kevin McMorrow, Michael Tiberi, and Alexander Mussfeldt, who contributed one each.

Michigan's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Central Wisconsin power plays. The Ice Dogs' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Michigan finished with 18 penalty minutes. The leading offender was Dalton Gertsen, who totaled six minutes in penalty time with three minors.

The Ice Dogs were helped by John Deal, who grabbed two goals. Deal scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 7:36 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Michigan had gained a power play chance when Antonio Falcon was whistled for checking from behind. Ashton Guy assisted on the tally. Deal's next tally on the power play made the score 3-3 with 16:00 left in the second period. Michigan also got points from Guy, who also registered one goal and one assist. Michigan got a goal from Aric Bergermann as well. Other players who recorded assists for Michigan were Jeffrey Barton, Ryan Morse, Michael Diaz, Hunter Ledgerwood, and Sean Murphy, who each chipped in one.

The Saints' Stephen Salek stopped 23 shots out of the 28 that he faced. Central Wisconsin incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Eric Matych made 47 saves for the Ice Dogs on 53 shots. Michigan registered one goal on two power play opportunities.
