GAME RECAP

McNeil nets hat trick, leads Louisiana to 5-1 win over Huntsville

Cajundome    Fri, Mar 16, 2012

Shawn McNeil netted a hat trick to lead the Louisiana IceGators over the Huntsville Havoc, 5-1.

McNeil's first goal came 26 seconds into the first period. He then added goals at 11:11 into the first and at 18:04 into the third.

Huntsville's power play was ineffective against Louisiana's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The IceGators racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and one major for 21 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 17.0 minutes per game Louisiana had been spending in the box. The IceGators stifled the Havoc's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The 34 shots that Louisiana put on net surpassed the IceGators' average of 25.2 shots per game this season.

Louisiana also got a goal from Tyler Lyon as well. Other players who recorded assists for Louisiana were Jason Hill, who had three, Josh Duplantis and August Aiken, who contributed one a piece, and Brayden Metz and Sean Murray, who each chipped in two.

By firing 28 shots on goal, Huntsville exceeded the 20.2 shots it averages per game this year. The Havoc were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 21 penalty minutes. Huntsville's defensemen bolstered the Havoc's offensive attack, as they bombarded Jeff Rose with 14 shots.

Jeff Rose took the win and made 16 saves before being replaced by Dan Earles who made 11 saves. Louisiana registered one goal on six power play opportunities. Mark Sibbald rejected 29 shots on goal for Huntsville.
