Pensacola survives Mississippi RiverKings comeback, wins 3-1

Mississippi RiverKings tried its best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Pensacola Ice Flyers would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 3-1.

Pensacola took a 3-0 lead during the third period, only to have Mississippi RiverKings storm back on a Mark Magnowski goal 15:33 into the third period to pull to two goals down.

Ryan Hohl was all over the ice for the Ice Flyers, as he tallied two goals in the win. Hohl scored at 2:43 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Pensacola and again while on the power play 14:39 into the first to make the score 2-0 Pensacola.

Pensacola put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Mississippi RiverKings to score on any of its seven power plays. The Ice Flyers were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 30 penalty minutes.

Jordan Chong also scored for Pensacola. More assists for Pensacola came via Adam Kuhn, who had two and Matthew Robertson, Paul Holder, and Tyler Soehner, who each chipped in one.

Mississippi RiverKings forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. Mississippi RiverKings had been averaging 17.0 minutes in penalties per game. The defense for Mississippi RiverKings played an important role offensively, racking up 14 shots on goal. The 31 shots that Mississippi RiverKings put on net surpassed Mississippi RiverKings' average of 22.6 shots per game this season.

Other players who recorded assists for Mississippi RiverKings were Kevin Hamel and Darrell Stoddard, who contributed one a piece.

Jesse Kallechy made 30 saves for Pensacola on 31 shots. The Ice Flyers registered two goals on four power play opportunities. Scott Darling rejected 18 shots on goal for Mississippi RiverKings.
