Braid leads Columbus over Huntsville, 7-4

Behind a great game by Jordan Braid, who had one goal and two assists, the Columbus Cottonmouths defeated the Huntsville Havoc, 7-4.

Braid beat Mark Sibbald with a shot 14:03 into the first period on the power play to make the score 2-1 Columbus. Greg Brown provided the assist.

In a losing effort, Huntsville was led by Stuart Stefan, who had two goals. Stefan scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 1:17 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Columbus. Brown picked up the assist. Stefan's next tally on the power play made the score 5-3 Columbus with 14:16 left in the third period. Mike MacDonald provided the assist.

Columbus forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and two majors for 44 minutes in penalty time. The Cottonmouths had been averaging 22.0 minutes in penalties per game. Columbus outdid its season average for goals scored. This season, the Cottonmouths average 3.3 goals per contest. Columbus relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Orrin Hergott, Braid and Greg Beller took 16 of the team's 24 shots.

Columbus also got points from Derek Pallardy, who also grabbed one goal and one assist and Ryan Pearson, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Columbus also got a goal from Mitch Wall as well. More assists for Columbus came via Andrew Krelove, who had two and David Cianfrini, Tom Maldonado, John Sullivan, and Bret Tyler, who each chipped in one.

The Havoc were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 19 penalty minutes. Huntsville relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Stefan, Jeff Hazelwood and Kyle Crawford took 19 of the team's 37 shots. The Havoc had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just two goals on nine chances.

Ray Ortiz also scored for Huntsville. In addition, Huntsville received assists from Jonathan Lafrance, who had two and Glenn Detulleo, Brad Flynn, and Scott Duncan, who contributed one a piece.

Andrew Loewen rejected 33 shots on goal for the Cottonmouths. Columbus registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. For the Cottonmouths, Levi Lind was ejected from the game. Sibbald recorded 17 saves for Huntsville.
