Mississippi RiverKings uses shootout to best Mississippi Surge, 3-2 (2-0 SO)

Mississippi RiverKings and Mississippi Surge both failed to score in overtime, but Mississippi RiverKings won the game 3-2 (2-0 SO) after Nick Vandenbeld's deciding goal in the shootout.

The shootout featured eight attempts between both teams. Mississippi RiverKings also got a shootout goal from Vandenbeld.

Mississippi RiverKings came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Mississippi RiverKings was down 2-1 after a goal by Mississippi Surge's Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn at 13:55 in the first period. Mississippi RiverKings knotted things up at 2-2 on a goal by Mike Tuomi at 5:31 in the third period.

Mississippi RiverKings managed to stay out of the box better than usual, racking up one minor for two minutes in penalty time. Mississippi RiverKings wound up below its season average of 17.0 penalty minutes per game.

Mississippi RiverKings was helped by Jeff Topilko, who racked up one goal. Topilko scored 13:05 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Tuomi provided the assist. Mississippi RiverKings additionally got points from Tuomi, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Mississippi RiverKings were Vandenbeld, Kyle Lundale, and David Wilson, who each chipped in one.

Mississippi Surge excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. Mississippi Surge failed to reach its usual level of shot production, putting 19 pucks on goal after averaging 26.7 shots per game this season.

Mississippi Surge also got a goal from Matt Kinnunen as well. More assists for Mississippi Surge came via Rob Campbell, Nick Guran, Jeff Grant, and Matt Rigtrup, who contributed one a piece.

Wilson recorded 17 saves for Mississippi RiverKings. Kiefer Smiley made 22 saves for Mississippi Surge on 24 shots. Mississippi Surge incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
