Texas squeaks by New Mexico, 4-2

The Texas Tornado gutted out a close 4-2 win against the New Mexico Mustangs.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Taylor Herndon's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

Herndon was all over the ice for Texas, as he tallied two goals in the win.

The Tornado's offense was clicking better than usual and put 38 shots on goal during the game, better than the 28.6 shots per game they average.

Texas additionally got points from Jackson Leef, who also grabbed one goal and one assist and Drew Mayer, who also had one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Texas were Marc Biggs and Mitchell McPherson, who each chipped in one and Drew Allen and Jordan Lovick, who contributed two a piece.

New Mexico allowed the opposing netminder to relax, taking only eight shots on goal to force six saves. The shot total fell below the Mustangs' season average of 24.6 shots per game. New Mexico excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances.

The Mustangs were led by Jimmy Peplinski, who racked up one goal and one assist. Peplinski scored 13:00 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Dallas Crum picked up the assist. New Mexico also got a goal from Marcus Nordlund as well. More assists for New Mexico came via Cody Walsh, who had one.

Frederick Leisner recorded six saves for Texas. The Tornado incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. New Mexico's Jake Stafford stopped 34 shots out of the 38 that he faced. The Mustangs incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
