Odessa pulls away in second, rolls over New Mexico, 6-2Ector County Coliseum Thu, Mar 15, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Odessa Jackalopes scored four goals in the second period to pull away from the New Mexico Mustangs and clinch a 6-2 win. Odessa was sparked by Mikko Virtanen, who racked up one goal. Virtanen scored 7:35 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Odessa. Josh Obregon assisted on the tally. The Jackalopes found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. Odessa averages 2.5 goals per game. The Jackalopes' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals. Odessa's offense was clicking better than usual and put 39 shots on goal during the game, better than the 21.9 shots per game it averages. Odessa also got points from Lawrence Cornellier, who also registered one goal and one assist. Odessa also got a goal from Ryan Doucet as well. Other players who recorded assists for Odessa were Aditya Karandikar, who had two and Brandon Gorges, Tyler Poulsen, Jalen Krogman, and Alex Ostrowski, who contributed one a piece. New Mexico managed to stay out of the box better than usual, totaling one minor for two minutes in penalty time. The Mustangs finished below its season average of 16.0 penalty minutes per game. New Mexico put 31 shots on net during the contest, more than the 24.5 it averages per game. The Mustangs were led by Charles Baldwin, who tallied one goal. Baldwin scored on the power play 1:30 into the second period to make the score 1-1. New Mexico earned a power play opportunity when Cornellier was put in the box for interference. Patrick Anderson provided the assist. Nolan Culver also scored for New Mexico. More assists for New Mexico came via Josh Bretner, Kirill Vorobyev, and Jayson Angus, who each chipped in one. Connor Hellebuyck recorded 29 saves for the Jackalopes. Odessa incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. Jake Stafford took the loss and made 24 saves before being replaced by Randy Graham who made nine saves. The Mustangs registered one goal on two power play opportunities.
