Alaska survives penalties, beats Fresno, 3-0

MTA Events Center    Fri, Mar 09, 2012

Despite having to fight off several power plays, the Alaska Avalanche were able to defeat the Fresno Monsters, 3-0.

Alaska was led by Tanner Fahlstedt, who had one goal. Fahlstedt scored 7:05 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Alaska. Joe Schmitz provided the assist.

The Avalanche were often in penalty trouble, totaling seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 20.0 minutes per game Alaska had been spending in the box. The Avalanche stifled Fresno's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Alaska featured an improved defense during the game. The Avalanche allow 2.9 goals per game.

Alaska also got points from Brandon Brossoit, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Evan Hesse also scored for Alaska. More assists for Alaska came via Mitch Kontny, who had two and Wehebe Darge and Gage Christianson, who each chipped in one.

The Monsters' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Alaska power plays. Fresno was held below its usual level of production. The Monsters put an average of 2.7 pucks into the net per game. By firing 23 shots on goal, Fresno exceeded the 19.6 shots it averages per game this year.

The Monsters were led by Kyle Sucher, who took three shots.

Bodhi Engum made 23 saves for Alaska on 23 shots. Macauley Haight rejected 23 shots on goal for Fresno. The Monsters totaled 23 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 0-for-7 on the power play. Fresno ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Brett Blomgren was ejected from the game.
