Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Springfield Jr. Blues defeated the Chicago Hitmen in a shootout 3-2 (3-0 SO). The shootout featured seven attempts between both teams. Springfield also got shootout goals from Kevin Walters and Kyle Cook.The Jr. Blues' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Chicago power plays. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals. By firing 40 shots on goal, Springfield exceeded the 27.4 shots it averages per game this year. The Jr. Blues were helped by Cody Dixon, who tallied one goal. Dixon scored on the power play 10:51 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Springfield. Springfield earned a power play opportunity when Tommy Dowell was put in the box for cross checking. Josef Pontasch provided the assist. Ben Kramer also scored for Springfield. In addition, Springfield received assists from Mike Williams and Chris Sitler, who contributed one a piece. Chicago was helped by Matt Cessna, who had one goal. Cessna scored 14:37 into the second period to make the score 2-2. David Gandara assisted on the tally. Chicago also got a goal from Mike Fazio as well. Other players who recorded assists for Chicago were Zach Mudge, Joey Haydock, and Shigenobu Kakudate, who each chipped in one. Gabe Antoni rejected 22 shots on goal for the Jr. Blues. Springfield incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Ryan Coyne recorded 37 saves for the Hitmen. Chicago incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
