Kenai River beats Alaska 4-3 after comeback scare

The Alaska Avalanche tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Kenai River Brown Bears would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 4-3.

Kenai River took a 3-1 lead during the third period, only to have Alaska storm back on a Mitch Kontny goal 9:33 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The Brown Bears were sparked by Ryan Walker, who had one goal and one assist. Walker scored 18:58 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Kenai River. Chris Blessing provided the assist.

Kenai River was ineffective while on the power play, as it was held to one goal off of 10 man advantages. The Brown Bears' offense was helped by the efforts of their defensemen, who managed to put 14 shots on net during the game. The 34 shots that Kenai River put on net surpassed the Brown Bears' average of 25.0 shots per game this season.

Kenai River also got points from Sean Muller, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Brett Lubanski also scored for Kenai River. More assists for Kenai River came via Jesse Ramsey, who had one and Matt Thompson, who had two.

The Avalanche racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and five majors for 61 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 20.0 minutes per game Alaska had been spending in the box. With 32 shots on target during the contest, the Avalanche exceeded the 26.3 shots they average per game this year.

Alaska was helped by Wehebe Darge, who grabbed one goal. Darge scored 10:04 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Alaska. Cobi Smith-Mass assisted on the tally. Alaska also got a goal from Evan Janssen as well. In addition, Alaska received assists from Gage Christianson, who had two and Justin Lutsch, Tanner Fahlstedt, and Jesse Kessler, who each chipped in one.

Kenai River's Austin Severson stopped 29 shots out of the 32 that he faced. The Brown Bears ended with 21 minutes in penalty time with three minors and three majors. Nick Kulmanovsky recorded 30 saves for the Avalanche. Alaska registered one goal on three power play opportunities.
