Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Kenai River Brown Bears defeated the Alaska Avalanche in a shootout 5-4 (2-1 SO). The shootout lasted for nine attempts between the teams. Alaska's shootout goal was scored by Wehebe Darge. In addition to the clincher, Kenai River got a shootout goal from Sean Muller.The Brown Bears saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. Kenai River made the score 4-2 on a power play goal by Alex Frere at 13:46 in the second period. The Avalanche evened things up at 4-4 on a power play goal by Tanner Fahlstedt at 14:11 in the third period. The Brown Bears' offense was clicking better than usual and put 34 shots on goal during the game, better than the 25.5 shots per game they average. Kenai River was led by Matt Thompson, who registered two goals. Thompson scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 16:35 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Kenai River. The Brown Bears earned a power play opportunity when Brandon Brossoit was put in the box for kneeing. Jesse Ramsey assisted on the tally. Thompson's next tally on the power play made the score 3-2 Kenai River with 9:50 left in the second period. Jacob Davidson provided the assist. Chris Blessing also scored for Kenai River. In addition, Kenai River received assists from Brett Lubanski, who had three and Ryan Walker and Marek Hemsky, who each chipped in one. Alaska was led by Kevin Novakovich, who had two goals. Novakovich scored the first of his two goals at 7:18 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Kenai River. Darge picked up the assist. Novakovich's next tally made the score 4-3 Kenai River with 11:17 left in the third period. Mitch Kontny provided the assist. Alaska also got a goal from Codey Hansen as well. More assists for Alaska came via Evan Janssen, Evan Hesse, Cody Bisbing, and Jeff Bergh, who contributed one a piece. Austin Severson recorded 19 saves for Kenai River. The Brown Bears totaled nine minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major and went 2-for-5 on the power play. The Avalanche's Bodhi Engum stopped 29 shots out of the 33 that he faced. Alaska totaled 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors and two majors and went 0-for-2 on the power play.
